Getting To Semowi: Directions & Road Access

Everything you need to know before travelling to Semowi Nature Camp.

IMPORTANT ACCESS INFORMATION  –  HIGH WATER LEVEL

Semowi Nature Camp is located in the Okavango Delta, just north of Maun. Due to the current high water levels, some roads shown on Google Maps and other navigation systems are not passable.

The Matsaudi route is currently the only access to Semowi.

📍 USE OUR SEMOWI ROUTE IN GAIA GPS

We strongly recommend downloading Gaia GPS before leaving Maun and following OUR SAVED SEMOWI ROUTE. Do not ask Gaia GPS to calculate a new route to Semowi.

  1. Download the Gaia GPS app on your phone.
    ➜ Download Gaia GPS for iPhone/iPad
    ➜ Download Gaia GPS for Android
  2. Open our Semowi Route using the link below.
  3. Tap Save Offline.
  4. When you are ready to drive, open the saved Semowi Route and tap Guide Me.
  5. Follow the route we have provided. Do not create or calculate another route in Gaia GPS.

Our Semowi Route works offline once saved, which is important as mobile network coverage is limited along the way.

STEP-BY-STEP DIRECTIONS

BEFORE YOU START

The drive from the tar road to Semowi is approximately 11 km on a bush road. This is normal, keep going.
We recommend resetting your trip meter to 0 km when leaving the tar road to help follow the distances below.

Drive the road Maun-Shorobe-Moremi (B334)

From Maun, drive north on the Maun-Shorobe-Moremi Road (B334)

20km after the roundabout look for 3 landmarks:

  • A metallic sculpture on the left side of the road
  • An electric pole marked “148” on the left side of the road
  • An Elephant Havens sign on the right of the road
    Do NOT turn until you see all three together.
    Turn-off coordinates: -19.81282, 23.62757

Leave the tar road and engage 4WD

Turn left off the tar road. If you wish, you may reduce your tyre pressure for improved traction.

  • Follow the bush track straight ahead
  • Continue for 1.2km
  • You will see a Semowi sign attached to a tree on the right side of the road and an Elephant Havens (EH) sign. Take the left fork.

Continue for about 800m, then turn right

Continue for approximately 800m until you reach an intersection

  • You will see an EH sign
  • Turn right, following the road around the farm.
  • You will see several tracks along this section. Don’t worry, they all lead to the same place. Simply keep following the main direction.
  • After approximately 1km, cross the first bridge.

Stay on the main track for approximately 3.5km

This is a long section. Keep going. You are on the correct road.

  • You will see several tracks along this section. Don’t worry, they all lead to the same place. Simply keep following the main direction.
  • You will also pass several Elephant Havens (EH) signs along the way. This is normal. Keep following the track.
  • Continue for the full 3.5 km until you reach the crossing described in Step 06.

At the crossing, go straight

You will reach a crossing with two signs:
1) Semowi
2) Elephant Havens (EH)

Follow the Semowi sign and continue STRAIGHT.

After about 30 m, follow the Semowi sign again

After approximately 30 m, you will reach a second crossing.
Follow the Semowi sign and continue on the track.

Continue for another 3-4km

Stay on this track for approximately 3–4 km.

You will encounter some water crossings. The water is NOT deep. Drive straight through. The base is firm and has been reinforced with stones and sandbags.

Keep following the main track.

Cross a small concrete bridge

Continue until you cross a small concrete bridge.
You are now getting close to Semowi.

Continue 1km to the pink house

After approximately 1 km, you will see a pink house on your right.

The gate to Semowi Nature Camp is located there. Welcome!

IMPORTANT TRAVEL INFORMATION

Plan to arrive before sunset

Please plan your journey to arrive at Semowi before sunset. Finding the camp after dark is extremely difficult.

If you are delayed, please contact us before sunset so that we can assist you.

If route assistance is required after dark, a call-out fee will apply.

Important

  • ⚠️ Important: There are Elephant Havens bus shelters along the road. These are NOT our turn-off. Stay on the main road and do not turn at any bus shelters. Also, do not turn into Matsaudi village.

    Only turn when you reach electric pole “148” together with the metal sculpture and the Elephant Havens sign.

  • If you reach Mochaba Crossing or Shorobe Primary School, you have gone too far.
    Please turn around and return to the electric pole marked “148”

GAIA GPS

We strongly recommend using our saved Semowi Route in Gaia GPS to reach Semowi Nature Camp. Our current route has been mapped and checked by our team and can be saved to your phone for use without mobile network coverage.

Important: Do not ask Gaia GPS to calculate a new route to Semowi. You must follow the Semowi Route provided below.

Before leaving Maun:

  1. Download the Gaia GPS app on your phone.
  2. Open our Road to Semowi – Current Route using the link below.
  3. The route will open in Gaia GPS.
  4. Tap SAVE OFFLINE. This is important, as mobile network coverage is limited along the way.
  5. When you are ready to drive to Semowi, open the saved route and tap GUIDE ME.
  6. Follow the Semowi route displayed in Gaia GPS all the way to the camp.

Do not create or calculate a different route in Gaia GPS, and do not use Google Maps or your vehicle’s GPS. These navigation systems may direct you onto roads that are currently closed or impassable due to high water levels.
